The Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids project is an EU project and is about producing polyunsaturated fatty acids from algae. It explores whether the production of PUFAs by microalgae is a good alternative for the production and marketing of fish oil. ACRRES is working on this project together with partner organisations from Germany, Austria and Portugal. ACRRES has a work package focused on economic prospects and the societal embedding of large-scale algae production, such as through exploration of social acceptance and by carrying out LCA (life cycle analysis).
What is innovative for ACRRES is that we broaden the LCA methodology: in addition to the usual Life Cycle Analysis (LCA, energy/ CO2 ) we do a Life Cycle Costing (LCC full cost) and Social Life Cycle Analysis (SLCA, social sustainability). In the work package concerned, a comprehensive sustainability assessment is done on the basis of these three analyses. Additionally, ACRRES is working on a SWOT analysis and a macro-economic survey (market).
