EnergyKeeper is a Horizon 2020 project which will run for three years. Its main goal is to design, develop and test a new scalable and sustainable flow battery based on organic redox active materials. In the design of redox flow batteries, reactants and their products are placed outside the battery housing. This provides the possibility of independent optimization of the capacity of the device and the stored energy. A 100KW redox flow battery with a capacity of 350kWh will be equipped with a battery management system for integration into a smart grid.
In 2017, the ACRRES test site will be prepared for testing. The actual testing will take place in 2018 and 2019. In addition to testing of the battery and the battery management system, different “prosumer” (producer and consumer of energy) business models will be developed and evaluated for economic feasibility. Wageningen Research will work on the project together with partners from research and industry from Germany, Lithuania, Spain, Israel and Italy.
